September is Literacy Month in British Columbia!
Each September, Decoda Literacy Solutions leads a province-wide awareness and fundraising campaign to celebrate Literacy Month. The campaign highlights the importance of literacy and raises funds to support community-based literacy programs and initiatives across BC.
80 children received a new book at the Fall Fair!
Literacy Outreach and Mother Goose Coordinator Kelly Anderson was at the Mount Waddington Fall Fair in September 2025 to hand out new books to children, sell fundraising literacy socks, and share information about our programs for all ages.
Kelly said about 170 people came through the booth and 80 children, babies and teens picked out a new book to take home!
She also had five people interested in volunteering with the literacy society!

This year’s theme is “Literacy: The Ripple Effect”
Improved literacy skills have a ripple effect, helping to improve quality of life at home, at work and in the community.
Why it matters:
-
More than 700,000 British Columbians face literacy challenges.
-
Strong literacy skills reduce poverty, improve health outcomes, and lower crime rates.
-
Children with access to books and reading at home are more likely to succeed in school—and life.
-
A 1% rise in literacy rates can boost Canada’s productivity by 3%
