Free Summer Programs Help Adults Build Skills and Confidence

Published in North Island Eagle, August 7, 2026

Literacy isn't just about reading books. It's about gaining the skills and confidence to make everyday life easier.

This summer, the Mount Waddington Family Literacy Society (MWFLS) is inviting adults (18+) to join a variety of free programs designed to help people learn, connect, and have fun.

"Learning should feel welcoming, not intimidating," said Adult Literacy Coordinator Jeanne James-Hory. "Whether you're figuring out your phone, writing your first story, learning to cook, or working toward a personal goal, we'll help you get there."

MWFLS offers free programs for adults who want to build practical life skills, connect with others, or receive one-to-one learning support.

"Many people are surprised to learn that literacy isn't just about reading”, Jeanne said. “It also includes everyday skills like using technology, managing money, preparing healthy meals, filling out forms, improving your writing, or getting ready for employment or further education. Our goal is to make learning practical, welcoming, and useful for everyday life."

Literacy Lounge Drop-In

Looking for a friendly place to ask questions, learn something new, or simply enjoy good company?

Literacy Lounge is a welcoming drop-in program where adults can enjoy refreshments, conversation, a simple hands-on activity, and one-to-one support. Whether you need help with your phone, understanding paperwork, setting goals, or learning a new skill, everyone is welcome. Guest presenters regularly share their expertise on topics such as technology, writing, wellness, and more.

Story Circle: An Introduction to Creative Writing

Everyone has stories worth telling.

Join guest instructor Garth Holden for a six-week introduction to storytelling and fiction writing. Together, participants will explore the basics of building engaging stories through fun discussions, writing activities, and examples from books, movies, comics, and everyday storytelling.

No previous writing experience is needed - just curiosity and a love of stories.

  • Port Hardy: Wednesdays, 5:00-7:00 p.m. (August 12-September 16) at Port Hardy Civic Centre

Visit Us at the Farmers' Market: Community Meal Kits Coming Soon

You'll also find MWFLS at the Port Hardy Farmers' Market throughout the summer, helping to deliver the BC Farmers’ Market Nutrition Coupon Program. Stop by to say hello, learn about free adult learning opportunities, chat about your goals, and discover how a volunteer learning coach can help you build the skills you’re after.

Later this summer, MWFLS hopes to launch free take-home Meal Kits for adult beginner cooks, readers, and low-income adults. Each kit will feature healthy recipes and fresh local ingredients whenever possible. Participants will be able to cook at home or join an online cook-along with a guest instructor. Watch for details on Facebook and at the Port Hardy Farmers' Market.

Interested in volunteering? MWFLS is always looking for people who would like to share a skill, mentor an adult learner, or help with workshops.
