NEWS RELEASE: February 26, 2026
A familiar face is stepping into a new role at the Mount Waddington Family Literacy Society. Jeanne James-Hory is the new Community Adult Literacy Coordinator.
Jeanne has been part of the Society for four years. She first worked as Program Coordinator for the United Way School’s Out program in Coal Harbour. In 2025, she also worked as Food Literacy Coordinator. Now, she steps into her new role supporting adult learners.
“We are thrilled that Jeanne continues to work with the literacy society,” said Laura Kaminker, Co-chair of the MWFLS Board of Directors. “She cares deeply about our communities and brings great energy and creativity to her work.”
As CALP Coordinator, Jeanne works with communities and partner groups to organize learning programs and workshops.

She offers drop-in sessions for adult learners to practice reading, writing and technology skills. She has hosted workshops including Financial Literacy, Smart Shopping, and Self-Employment workshops from ABC Life Literacy’s Money Matters program. She also organizes cooking workshops using MWFLS’ mobile kitchen.
Jeanne is also an artist and small business owner. She believes connection and collaboration help build strong, healthy communities.
“Sometimes the biggest impact is just sitting beside someone and helping them work through something that feels overwhelming. When people build confidence and new skills, it opens doors, and that benefits all of us.”

Community Adult Literacy Programs (CALPs) are free, non-credit programs to improve literacy and essential skills for work, for home or to prepare to pursue formal learning or training at a public post-secondary institution. CALPs are funded by the Province of British Columbia through the Ministry of Post-Secondary Education and Future Skills.
The Mount Waddington Family Literacy Society works with communities, schools and organizations to support literacy and learning for all ages on North Vancouver Island. Visit the MWFLS website to learn about their free programs at: mwfamilyliteracy.org
