News Release: September 2024 [Port McNeill] –
More trained education assistants and community support workers will be available to support North Vancouver Island communities next year.
In partnership with North Island College, the Mount Waddington Family Literacy Society (MWFLS) was approved to deliver North Island College’s Human Services Certificate – Educational Assistant/Community Support, Indigenous Focus project through the Community Workforce Response Grant program. The Community Workforce Response Grant supports in-demand skills training leading to secure and sustainable employment for British Columbians. This funding was provided by the Government of Canada through the Canada-BC Workforce Development Agreement.
Eight students from Port Alice, Port Hardy, Port McNeill and Coal Harbour, as well as two students from Port Alberni, were awarded tuition-free training and other supports and began classes remotely in August 2024. The program is offered through digital delivery, with practicum placements taking place in the community. The Mixalakwila campus in Port Hardy supports the program by providing student services and textbooks.
“North Island College is thrilled to partner with the Mount Waddington Family Literacy Society to bring this program to the region and support students in their educational goals,” said Donna Merry, Regional Manager, North Island College, Mixalakwila campus. “This is one example of the many partnerships we are engaged in, bringing community-led programming to learners and reducing barriers so students can fully participate in the program.”
“This is the third time we have received this funding in partnership with North Island College,” said Charity Gillett, Executive Director at MWFLS. “This grant provides tuition, books and other supports to eligible students to help them succeed in the program.”
MWFLS also stewarded a grant for 10 students in 2020 and 10 students in 2022.
