18 teens from North Island Secondary School, Port Hardy Secondary School and Eke Me-Xi Learning Centre received free pizza making kits over spring break, with some meeting virtually to cook together the next day. Each kit had a pack of pizza crusts, cheese, pizza meat and pizza sauce.
Literacy Outreach Coordinator Kelly Anderson facilitated the online cooking class.
“We had a lot of fun. I asked what was the craziest pizza everyone had eaten,” she said. “Some answers included pepperoni and cotton candy, pickle pizza with dill chips, candy pizza and sushi pizza.”
Afterwards, multiple participants reflected how nice it was to get together with their siblings and make some simple but delicious food.
"Food is a great way to connect with teens," says Kelly. "We plan to continue to add more programs to support local youth. After spring break, keep an eye out for our second round of book club at PHSS. We are also inquiring to see if any teens would like a book club at NISS/Port McNeill as well."
The free workshop was made possible by United Way Food Hub funding.
