Connecting at Culture and Creativity Day

Sharing, connection, and hands-on creativity were highlights at the Culture and Creativity Day on January 25 at the Port Hardy Civic Centre, a free community event hosted by the Immigrant Welcome Centre of the North Island and Mount Waddington Welcoming Communities Coalition.

Participants learned about upcoming cultural celebrations observed at this time of year, and created paper lanterns, folded origami, Ramadan crafts, and more.

Our Adult literacy coordinator Jeanne James-Hory was there to share information about our free learning programs and volunteer opportunities, and some fun activities.

“Together, we worked on a collaborative mural, played board games, and enjoyed meaningful conversations,” said Jeanne.

“We invited visitors to take a small hanging “fortune” with an uplifting message inside, and encouraged them to leave a positive message for someone else to discover," said Jeanne. "It was a simple way to spread kindness and connection. The day was filled with laughter, interaction, and the beginning of new friendships.”

Join us for the next Culture and Creativity Day on February 22, 2026, 2:00-5:00 p.m., at the Port Hardy Civic Centre!
