“As I recently completed my first year as executive director, I'm reflecting on the successes and highlights of our free programs and events in North Island communities. Working with communities, schools and organizations, our Mount Waddington Family Literacy Society staff, board, volunteers and learners are proud of the accomplishments this year. See the impact we made together below!" (plus photos)
Summer update: In July and August, there will be no newsletter and reduced programming, as the Adult Literacy and Mother Goose programs take a summer break. Please follow our Facebook page @mwfamilyliteracy for updates and any extra programming this summer.
We look forward to offering continued and new programming, events and support in September, when we'll be back for Literacy Month with tips, activities and more free books for kids!

Impact highlights and photos
35 elementary school students improved their reading skills in our ONE-to-ONE and Fostering Literacy reading tutor programs.
Adult learners improved their skills at regular biweekly drop-in sessions to practice reading, writing or internet use, monthly conversation clubs, and community workshops on topics from artificial intelligence to financial literacy in our Community Adult Literacy Program.
Families learned together stories, crafts and connection in Sointula and Port McNeill Mother Goose On the Go programs.
Children made connections and learned new skills in the Coal Harbour and Sointula United Way School's Out after-school programs.
Children received free books. It's part of our mission to get books into children's hands, so we give free books to kids at our annual Literacy Fair and other community events like the Fall Fair and Easter Festival, and the annual Advent Book Box project tradition.
Adults went to college. For a third time, we stewarded a grant to provide tuition and support for 10 students to attend the North Island College Education Assistant/Community Support Worker program.
Teens connected in new programs. To support local teens, we had our first teen book club and online pizza cooking class. We also hire teen reading tutors in our Fostering Literacy program.
We got a new look. Thanks to District of Port Hardy's Digital Business Enhancement program, this year we refreshed our branding, monthly newsletter, and have a beautiful new website.
